Alesis, M-AUDIO, KRK Systems, JBL and Tannoy all have (passive) near-field studio monitors within or near your budget; just be aware that it is nearly impossible to find any worthwhile active studio monitors in your price range. A quick for-what-it’s-worth: when it comes to relatively conventional two-way studio monitors you should give preference to models that use 6.5- to 7-inch (or roughly 170 to 180 mm) diameter mid-to-low frequency drive units. Please use the resources I’ve provided below to look through the aforementioned brands above, followed by searching online to obtain various ‘street’ prices for those models in which you may be interested. In the process you may also want to take a look at the various reviews you will likely find. When it’s all said and done make a list of the top three or so models and head down to your local pro sound dealers to audition the units firsthand (or simply take your chances and purchase one of your choices from an authorized online retailer.) However, in your search you may find that you may need or want to be more flexible in your budget depending on your monitoring requirements. It’s also worth mentioning that for your budget you may be much better-off purchasing a high quality set of headphones/earphones rather than potentially compromising on a set of underperforming monitors. As an alternative to budget near-field passive monitors headphones (preferably paired with a good headphone amplifier*) will offer higher volume levels, lower distortion and better frequency extension. Headphones also eliminate the need for acoustical treatments that are often necessary when one wishes to obtain the optimum audio performance from studio monitors.######################## RESOURCES ########################Alesis Monitor One MK2 Passive (near-field) Studio Reference Monitorhttp://www.alesis.com/monitoronemkii M-AUDIO Reference Monitorshttp://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.family&ID=studiomonitors KRK Systems – Monitorshttp://www.krksys.com Tannoy Studio Monitorshttp://www.tannoy-speakers.com/s.php?section=Studio&sub=1 Fostex Studio Monitorshttp://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/music_products/pm_series_mkII.shtml Blue Sky International http://www.abluesky.com Mackie – Studio Monitorshttp://www.mackie.com/products/studiomonitors/index.html ADAM Professional Audio – Studio Monitorshttp://www.adam-audio.com/studio/ Genelec Loudspeakershttp://www.genelec.com Genelec 6010A Bi-Amplified Loudspeaker System http://www.genelec.com/products/2-way-monitors/6010a/ PMC Professional Studio Monitorshttp://www.pmc-speakers.com/productCats.php?mode=cats&subcid=1 JBL Professional Studio Monitorshttp://www.jblpro.com/products/recording&broadcast/index.html Dynaudio Acoustics http://www.dynaudioacoustics.dk Focal Professional Studio Monitor Loudspeakershttp://www.focalprofessional.com Focal Twin6 Be Monitorshttp://www.recordingmag.com/productreviews/2008/07/18.html ATChttp://www.atc.gb.net ________________________ All About Home and Project Studio Monitorshttp://www.tweakheadz.com/studio_monitors.htm Monitors Demystifiedhttp://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct00/articles/monitor.htm?print=yes Monitors versus Hi-Fi Speakershttp://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun02/articles/monitors.asp?print=yesChoosing Monitorshttp://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul05/articles/monitors.htm?print=yes SOS Articles Database Search: Monitorshttp://www.soundonsound.com/search?PageSize=80&Keyword=monitors&Summary=No Ten Powered Nearfields Reviewed (2001)http://www.prorec.com/Articles/tabid/109/EntryId/154/Ten-Powered-Nearfields-Reviewed.aspxInexpensive Studio Monitoring Upgradeshttp://www.prosoundweb.com/article/print/tech_tip Mix Guides » Studio Monitorshttp://mixguides.com/studiomonitors/ Monitor Speakers | Articles and Reviews from Electronic Musicianhttp://emusician.com/speakers/ [PDF] Studio Monitors & Headphoneshttp://www.proaudioreview.com/uploadedFiles/ProAudioReview/Supplementary_Materials/buyers-series-studio-monitors-headphones.pdf ________________________ Additional references to studio monitors in the press/media:Digital Producerhttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22studio+monitors%22+site%3Adigitalproducer.digitalmedianet.com Pro Audio Reviewhttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22studio+monitors%22+site%3Aproaudioreview.com Pro Sound Newshttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22studio+monitors%22+site%3Aprosoundnews.com ProSoundWebhttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22studio+monitors%22+site%3Aprosoundweb.com Recording Magazinehttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=monitors+site%3Arecordingmag.com Resolutionhttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=monitors+site%3Aresolutionmag.com Sound & Video Contractorhttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22studio+monitors%22+site%3Asvconline.com ________________________ *Amp for Sennheiser HD595? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090116140512AA8nYzg
most monitors will work with most systems (99% of the time)if they both have vga then 1 cable required if 1 has a dvi then an adaptor is needed if both have dvd then 1 cable required so as yours are both dell 100% sure they will connect
Like with anything, it really depends on your budget. For inexpensive ones, I like these Mackies:http://www.zzounds.com/item–MACMR8If you have the money:http://www.zzounds.com/item–JBLLSR4328PIf you are rich:http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/1038B/If you are poor, these actually sound pretty good:http://www.zzounds.com/item–BEHMS16
Not much. The engineering is a little better and they are structurally better, but in my opinion, NOT worth the huge cost for the little gain in performance achieved. Buy what sounds the BEST to YOU, regard of any other factor. It is how it sound to YOU which is the ONLY deciding factor if money is no object, otherwise you buy the best sounding you can find within your budget.
No amp needed – “active” speakers are like computer speakers – the amp is inside the speaker.
Well be more understandable then someone might answer
Yes you can!I have been using two high quality studio monitors with my audio/video system for years and they sound great. I have these:http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCode=1188&Category=MonitoringThey are no longer made but there are many others out there:http://www.zzounds.com/item–ALEM1MK2You would need to find a “passive” monitor to connect to a normal home audio system. The big trend in studio monitors now is “powered monitors” that have the amplifier built in. These could be used with a home system too but they would not connect to a speaker output but they would connect to a “line” output.
There are some industry standards that most people like. I personally have/like the Sennheiser HD280’s. There are Sony, AKG, and Equation audio equivalents that are favored by others for different reasons. Check out sweetwater or musicians friend and browse around the $100 mark…then go look for a used set on ebay or craigslist. Thats what I’d do.
Well, you would have to use the audio out jack from the laptop and split the right & left channels to each speaker. Though I doubt if the laptop would have enough audio output power to actually power those speakers adequately, if at all (the speaker coils on them are too big and require more power than a laptop can output), so it’d probably be best to run it through a pre-amp or actual amplifier first that has enough power for those size speakers.
Wharfedale Diamond Series an exceptional product. The Diamond Pro Active studio monitors retails at $149.00 for a single speaker. Best.P.S. The Diamond Pro Active studio monitors are within the Diamond series.
