Rule of a HOME Bar: You stock a bar for friends/guests first, but you make sure that you have in it, whatever you like. You can go cheap at your local pub, but you don’t want to look cheap for your friends & guests…it tells then how much you value their relationship…always make yourself look good! For example, I like bourbon so I have a top shelf brand called Windford Reserve & my wife likes gin so we have a top shelf gin as well. I’m not big on rum, but have a top shelf rum; I hate scotch, but have Johnny Walker Black; Patron tequila (and I don’t drink tequila either); and a Russian vodka which a worker of my wife recommended, as she is Russian. My bar is picked to not only show well, but drink well at the same time. I enjoy a good cognac & every year at Christmas treat myself to something different then I purchased the previous year…so I always have a nice bottle or two of it; and have a couple of good bottles of red & another one of white (depending on what you like though). The cognac with coffee makes a great after dinner drink.One, I don’t drink that much, so in the long run, it’s not that much more expensive to have the good stuff. When I was back in college, it was the complete opposite of that position…quantity over quality. The bottle of scotch that I have, is about 3 years old and has never been opened! My rum was just opened about a month ago and is 2 or 3 years old as well.Bloody marys & screwdrivers are brunch drinks and not after dinner drinks. Mixers: Use small bottles of tonic & club soda…less waste then when using large bottles and have a pretty good shelf life. Either cans or 12/16 oz bottles of Coke (real Coke not some off the wall store brand); Canada Dry Ginger Ale (again, the real stuff) also in cans; a pitcher of water for those wanting a splash as their mixer; you can still have some orange juice & grapefruit juice (again in pitchers) but save their original containers for leftovers. When you open one can of mixer at a time, you’ll have less waste and easier to save for your next event. A bottle of Kahlua always adds a nice touch and will usually last a long time…also goes well in coffee for after dinner drinks.Stuff: cut up some limes & have in a cup; have some large green olives, in a matching cup; a flat container of salt for any tequila drinkers. You could go into any number of other items such as assorted juices, cocktail onions, etc., but this will cover your basics…but, always have what you like. Beer: Stock what you like…but have at least a regular & a light…in bottles! Depending on your home layout, there are any number of ways to have a presentation of beer. When we have as many people as you have coming, I usually know what they like to drink…but in a number of cases, I know they might like a beer like Miller, which is a good cheap beer, but I’ll still have something better…which no one ever turns down. I try to have a mix: one Dutch, Heineken; Corona & Corona Light (my beer); Rolling Rock regular; Coors & Coors Light. While you might say this is more than you want, it gives a great presentation and thus a great impression on my guests, it’s what I know that my regular guests/family members like. Remember, you like to go out to eat a lot…the food is always important, but there is an appreciation of the food’s ‘presentation’…that makes a impression of us…and it makes a great impression on guests as well.
