Sure you can do this. Connect the game console to one of the inputs on the DVD recorder, and set the DVD recorder to use that input. (On my DVD recorder, there’s IN1 and IN2, for instance.)Set the TV to its input where the DVD recorder is plugged in. With the game console on, you should see the game on the TV. Now just hit record on the DVD recorder and it’ll be recording your game play. Hit stop on the recorder to stop recording. If you mess up, you can delete that recording from the disc and try again. When you’re finished, be sure to finalize the DVD (check your recorder’s manual for how to do this). Unless you’ve finalized the DVD, it won’t be playable on other DVD players or your computer. When that’s finished, pop the DVD into your computer, and now you can rip, edit, and convert the video to your heart’s content.

Some people have DVR’s so what ever is playing on the tv will be recorded on a disc than you can rip it to your computer

I’ve played with a lot of video capture cards over the years, but there are many more that I haven’t played with. Because of that, I can’t really make a recommendation on a specific product. But I can tell you that Hauppauge makes some fine devices at very attractive prices. Stay away from Pinnacle (Avid) products. When you mention picture quality, what type of connection would you be working with? HDMI, Component, Composite, DVI, S-Video, VGA…? With PC capture cards, signal type usually determines overall quality.

You have three options:1. Use a videocamera2. Use a DVD recorder3. Use a capture cardYou should really go for the capture card, there are lots which aren’t too expensive. I have a plextor external USB capture module which is great, and I got it for 90 bucks.

The above poster made a great recommendation of the Mackie Onyx Mixer.Although he is a little incorrect on what he said. The Onyx Mixer with Firewire Card is capable of doing multi-track recording (each channel to its own track), which is what you want. This way you can edit / mix each individual instrument independently of each other to get a good overall mix. The preamps on the Onyx are superb. Using it live is an option too and it sounds great. A mixer can be used for live or recording. Mixers with USB or Firewire capablities can be used for both. Standard Mixers are typically used for live situations (it allows you to get levels set for each instrument and tweak some EQ’s). As for sending all the guitars through one channel, you’d actually plug them into their own channel. Say channel 1, 2, and 3. Then you’d send them all to Aux 1 (a knob on each channel, you just turn it up). Aux 1 will then be all 3 guitars, but you can still set each level independently (very important to get good levels). A recording interface would be only for recording. It wouldn’t have the ability to send out mains to a PA or Amp. But you could plug each instrument in separately and record. Each option I give you, comes with Recording Software, so don’t look at purchasing that separately, it’s included in the package. Option 1:Mackie Onxy 1220 + Firewire Card = $1,030http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Onyx1220http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/OnyxFWCardThis is a sweet setup. 12 channel onyx mixer and firewire card. The firewire gives you great quality. The onyx preamps are solid for recording and live purposes. Again you can use this as a mixer (for live purposes or practice sessions) or as a recording interface (up to 12 channels of multi-track recording). This comes with Tracktion, which is an awesome Recording Software. It’s very easy to learn how to record, edit, mix, and master tracks. Option 2:Mackie Onyx 16 Channel Mixer + Firewire Card = $1,300http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Onyx1620/http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/OnyxFWCardHere’s the same thing as above but you have 16 channels. I would think 12 would be sufficient, but you got a lot of vocal mics and you need a lot of mics on the drums, so 16 might be the safer play. Again this comes with Tracktion and you have to buy the Firewire Card separately.Option 3:Presonus FireStudio 2626 – $699http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/FireStudio/This is a recording only option. It has 24 inputs, so you’ll have plenty of room to plug in all your instruments. The recording software is Cubase, which is an awesome software too. A little more complex than Tracktion, it will take more time to learn, but it has a lot of great features and good quality. There you go. I’d choose one of those three based on your budget. Also some monitors would be nice once you get into recording. It’s the only way to get an accurate mix. If you have questions feel free to email me.

You need to buy a capture card. Either that or hook up a DVD burner to it and burn gameplay onto the dvd, then transfer onto your PC.
