For what purpose – recording your voice? Recording an acoustic guitar? Recording drums? Read a LOT of reviews, do a lot of online research and if you possibly can get an audition of both microphones at a music store through the same audio mixer at the same settings to see which one you like best. Whichever one sounds better to you – buy that one. I don’t own any Samson mikes. I do own several (older model) Audio Technica mikes. This doesn’t mean that the Samsons are worse – I just don’t own any.

not hearing what your recording sounds like i can’t really tell where a problem would be. i would recommend getting right up onto the mic and use a pop filter. the more you stand away from the mic, the more room noise the mic is going to pick up. where are you recording at? if you are in the middle of a bedroom you probably are getting pretty poor sound in general whether you are close or not. i recommend using a closet or small room with something to keep the sound from bouncing off the walls so much. when i’ve done home recording of hip-hop vocals i found that putting the mic in a walk-in closet with clothes on each side will create more of the iso booth sound you will get from a studio. studios will have isolation booths that are small rooms that are sound treated to kill the extra room noise. also compressing vocals is always good, and using a filter to filter out the low end room noise will help clear up your recordings.

I agree Neumanns are great sounding, also try out some Rode mics, they make a great tube mic that goes for about 800 bucks, and many people consider it almost as good as the Neumann U87 (which by the way is well over 3 grand). For pre-amps i’d advise ART pre-amps for that price range HOWEVER it would be worth the money, to spend a little more and but a Universal Audio Pre-amp for about $800 like the UA 710 Single Channel Tube and Solid State Mic Preamp. It’s great because it’s very versitile and gives you many choices.

You need to specify first what you have. Do you have a video camera? Sometimes they have a socket where you can attach an external mic to override the input from the built-in mic. If you will only use your webcam to record video then you can attach a mic to the computer.

  5. Grimace says:

You need some type of USB (or firewire) audio interface such as this one: http://www.presonus.com/products/Detail.aspx?ProductId=53 — That is just an example — there are plenty out there at various prices so shop around. These devices have the XLR Mic input with Phantom power that you need and they work with Garage Band and Logic.Hope this helps

You have to treat your room when using a condenser mic. Not only will it pick up the faintest background noise (I can hear someone’s stomach growling with mine), it is also sensitive to echos in the room. Try to cover hard surfaces and find things to absorb sound. Dynamic mics aren’t nearly and sensitive. You can get away with recording just about anywhere.

  7. Christopher says:

You can always find some cheap things on Craigslist, but for a good studio microphone you’re gonna be at least 300 dollars in the hole.

  8. pro_av_guy says:

I looked at the specs of the microphone. Although it does not say, I’m sure you will need phantom power. Condenser microphones need DC voltage to operate. You can simply purchase a phantom power supply or consider a preamp that will allow for some EQ and gain adjustment. Happy recording.
