There use to be Pro Tools Free on Digidesign.com. Its an older version though, 5.0.

  3. Nick says:

I assume you are talking about a digidesign audio interface, and if so, yes you can use it with Logic Pro.

  4. KDecka says:

Pro Tools LE is recently Win7 compatible.Pro Tools LE 8.0.4 for Windows supports the following operating systems:Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Home or Professional, 32-bit)Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (32-bit)Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit)Just make sure you update it.Hope this helps,KDecka

you need a lot of memory and processing power to run protools efficiently. what you are looking for is more around the $2000 range…

  6. ChinChilla says:

Pro Tools LE requires a Digidesign audio interface: if you buy an interface new, it will come with Pro Tools LE, probably version 7.x (until they start including a version of 8),, which you will then be able to upgrade to version 8 via download. You should check with your dealer about the specific version the interface ships with. Not sure about Auto-Tune working with PT 8- try checking the Antares website.

You make a point about vst plugins because pro tools doesn’t directly support them. Other than that, I think pro tools is the answer. I work with pro tools everyday and have for the past 7 or so years. If you go the m-powered route, you are required to have m-audio hardware, but this shouldn’t be a downside. M-audio continues to support more interfaces for pro tools, and cost & quality go hand in hand with any interface. M-audio has interfaces that support 24 bit 192KHz sample rates. That is the highest definition available in PCM recording to date. The cheapest interface that supports these numbers is the 24/192 card which can be found for about $140. The higher price interfaces really just allow more I/O. If this doesn’t sell you, there is a way to use vst’s in pro tools. There is a sofware called vst to rtas wrapper.

It would be really helpful if I knew what your overall goal in buying all this equipment was. I know you want to record, but what type of speakers, monitors, do you have? I see that you are looking at buying monitor headphones, so possibly you don’t have any speakers or monitors?Honestly the answer to your question is your budget. The Mbox 2 setup is around $400 I believe. There is an Mbox 2 Mini that is out now that looks pretty sweet and the price is a little lower. And yes M Audio, Line 6, Presonus all have recording interfaces that work with Cubase or Pro Tools. So it really just depends on your budget. As for the drum machine, that’s a tough one. Cubase and Pro Tools don’t come with virtual drums usually, when you buy them in a package, like the Mbox or the Firebox. So that is even more money you’ll have to spend there. Although you can get Fruity Loops which has alright drum packages, to make drums. The benefit of getting a drum machine, is for live purposes. You can use them at show, other than that, you can get the same quality using some type of software, or even better. I could recommend a bunch of different setups, if I knew a little more of what equipment you already have and what type of music you play.I just changed my settings to allow emails. So go ahead and email me if you want and I think I’ll be able to help you out a little more.If you really are on a tight budget, I would go with the M-Audio setup or Presonus Firebox. Don’t spend too much on headphones, it’s really not worthy it, unless you are planning on playing in live shows and are willing to pay for wireless monitors. I would just get some $100 or less studio headphones. And start saving up for Reason and a Midi-Controller Keyboard to run your drums. Reason is the coolest program ever and has a ton of drum kits, string kits, piano kits, organ kits, etc. It’s $400, but completely worth it. Drum machines can be a waste of money unless you are planning on running live, and even then with loop stations, etc….they are not that cool.Good luck.

You can use LE with the 003. The M powered version works only the Mbox series. Technically Pro Tools LE and M are the same thing. The differences are very small now. HD will not work with the 003, since HD requires its own hardware to function. You should consider joining a recording community like http://www.audioneeds.com – there are sound engineers there who can help you with your questions, and guide you toward the direction you want to go. It’s also a good place to go and share your knowledge, and promote your music.Hope it helps

Most M-Audio products are qualified for use in Windows 7. You didn’t tell us which, so I suggest looking it up to see what works and what doesn’t, but the majority of their devices will work. The Bad News: Pro Tools (M-Powered, LE, and HD) is NOT qualified for use in windows 7. I can’t imagine it will happen anytime soon, being that only recently was Pro Tools able to run on Vista 64 bit. Keep in mind that they have not officially qualified it, meaning that if you try it and it doesn’t work, you’re on your own. The sad thing is that I love Pro Tools, and aside from driver issues, the program has only once given me any problems (mp3 export gets mad when using Melodyne). There is an easy workaround for that though. My recommendation is don’t upgrade unnecessarily. People are so quick to get the latest operating system, when nothing really big has changed. If you have a dedicated OS for audio, why on earth are you upgrading to a new operating system that is potentially unstable and not completely tested? The benefits of upgrading are typically for running multiple programs, internet, background processes, etc. If your operating system is giving you trouble now, then you need to optimize it and take time to set it up. However, if audio is not the main reason for the computer, then create a dual boot, where windows 7 is on another drive. That’s what I did with Vista 32 and 64. This way I was able to run Pro Tools in a 32 bit environment and pop over to the 64 bit side for general games, surfing, and multiple programs (while the folks at Digi scrambled to get it together over the 64 bit business). So basically, the current “statue” is not standing and might not be built for a while.

  11. AudioNeedsCom says:

You need to plug your electric guitar into the interface’s audio input. Then select create a new track on Pro Tools and set the audio input to the same input you have the guitar plugged into. If you can’t figure it out, ask some of the geeks at http://www.audioneeds.com – that forum is filled with audio engineers who are always on answering pro tools related questions. Hope it helps

there is the new 7.4 for vista. it says only business and ultimate editions, it also states that sp1 will not work, or not certified, but i am running 7.4 on vista home premium w/ sp1 and it runs as good if not better than my old xp system w/ same hardware memory etc…

  13. Glenn says:

No. It looks for the hardware first. If it’s not there, it doesn’t load. Check eBay, there’re tons of qualifying hardware for sale there.

  14. KDecka says:

There isn’t any separate software for the rack. Try reinstalling. Make sure you DO NOT have the rack plugged in until after you restart the computer from the installation. Also, the rack has to be plugged in for you to be able to open Pro Tools.-KDecka
