Definitely go with the Speakon. It was designed from the ground up to be a speaker connector. The 1/4 inch connector is a very old design and was never meant for speaker level voltage and current. The speakon will never pull out, has low contact resistance, no soldering needed, accepts large gauge wire, super durable (need I go on?). Plus you’ll look more professional.

That amp will drive 2 Ohms so you could just parallel both cabs together and run the amp as a mono bridged output. The other option (like you have it) is to run each cab in the Biamp modeYou will get a bit more power if the cabs are paralleled, but it will be a ‘mushier’ sound with the lower impedance.I would stick with what the manual recommends on page 13 for the BiAmp mode:http://www.ampeg.com/pdf/SVT4PRO.pdf.

The following is a list of the more popular brands of 1/4″ (phone) plugs (and jacks) as well as a few of the better-known online audio and musical instrument retailers. Though there are several other brands those with which I am most familiar are Neutrik, Switchcraft, Pro Co and Whirlwind; Switchcraft* will probably be the lowest-price connectors you will find from amongst the higher quality brands. The Switchcraft Series 188 and 299 Heavy Duty 1/4″ Commercial Phone Plugs are excellent plugs and are highly recommended.Neutrik – Audio – Plugshttp://www.neutrik.com/us/en/audio/203_63341/Plugs_group.aspx Pomona Electronics– 1/4″ Phone Plugs and Jackshttp://www.pomonaelectronics.com/search.php?startnum=1&searchtype=All&keywords=1/4 – [PDF] Model 6873 2-Pole, 1/4″ Phone Plughttp://www.pomonaelectronics.com/pdf/broadcast/2417020_6873_6874.pdf Pro Co Sound 1/4″ (Phone Plug) Cable Mount Connectorshttp://www.procosound.com/products/catalog/show/77 Switchcraft* 1/4″ (0.250″, 6.35mm) Jacks & Plugshttp://www.switchcraft.com/products/jack-search.html Whirlwind – Audio Connectors & Adaptershttp://www.whirlwindusa.com/audadp01.html ________________________ Cardas Audio 1/4″ Phone (not “Phono”) Plugshttp://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=oem&content_id=26 Authorized Cardas Dealers http://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=dealers&dealer_type_name=OEM/Component+Parts&content_id=9 FURUTECH FP-703(G) High Performance Mono Phone Plughttp://www.furutech.com/new1/produ_2.asp?ProdNo=234 Distributor/Dealer – Elite Audio Video Distributionhttp://www.eliteavdist.com/detail.cfm?id=9004845 ________________________ The Cable Companyhttp://www.thecableco.com D’Addario Planet Waves – Cable Station™ Plugshttp://store.daddario.com/category/148173/Cable_Station%26%238482%3B__Plugs George L’s Custom Gear – Solderless Phone Plugshttp://www.georgelsstore.com/custom.html Guitar Center – Jacks & Plugshttp://www.guitarcenter.com/Jacks—Plugs-Cables.gc?ipp=100 MCM Electronics – 1/4″ Audio Connectorshttp://www.mcmelectronics.com/browse/1/4%22/3831293 Music123 – Jacks and Plugshttp://www.music123.com/Jacks—Plugs-Cables—Snakes.Music123?pgno=1&ipp=48 Musician’s Friend – Jacks & Plugshttp://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/navigation/jacks-plugs-cables?N=100001+306369&Ns=P_Score%7c1&rpp=80 Parts ConneXionhttp://www.partsconnexion.com Sam Ash (Music Store) – Connectorshttp://www.samash.com/catalog/categorysub.asp?categorysubid=649&departmentid=9 Sweetwater Sound – Connectorshttp://www.sweetwater.com/c809–Connectors zZounds – Connectorshttp://www.zzounds.com/cat–Connectors–2352*Digi-Key, Mouser, Onlinecomponents.com, Sager Electronics, Newark and Allied Electronics are a few other major sources that also sell Switchcraft connectors.http://www.stkcheck.com/evs/mfg2.asp?mfg=SWITCHCRAFT&part=238&stype=Search ________________________ Rane Corporation – Reference Libraryhttp://www.rane.com/library.html– Sound System Interconnectionhttp://www.rane.com/note110.html – [PDF] Sound System Interconnectionhttp://www.rane.com/pdf/ranenotes/Sound%20System%20Interconnection.pdf

I would urge you to take a look at The Pod XT (made by Line 6) for effects…it’s $300…the XT Live is $400, worth the extra $100 as it is a floor unit – every effect known to man, and you can also download sounds that other people have created with it and posted online…check it out at your guitar store (assuming you haven’t already, it’s kind of the obvious choice). A pro session guitarist I met told me he hated the original Pod, thought it sounded tinny, but really likes the XT and thinks it is a huge improvement. I’m partial to the Marshall amp sound…but with the gadget above, you can make an Ibanez through a Fender amp sound like a Les Paul through a Marshall amp and vice-versa. I’ve used pretty much the same Fender amp for >15 years and it’s still humming along, so I guess that speaks well on the quality question – good luck and keep rockin -

  6. wires says:

Probably around 16 gauge. Maybe 14 gauge if the insulation isn’t too heavy. The problem is getting the complete cable through the rubber boot and into the connector. If the wire and insulation together creates a cable that’s too heavy it’s very difficult to do. Unless you’re going a fairly long distance, there’s no real need for a large cable.

The best/cheapest place I have found (and purchased the exact same items you are looking for) is E-bay..

  8. rdrnnr1972 says:

It’s a type of audio connector, typically used by high-end/professional audio equipment.http://www.crownaudio.com/pdf/amps/126986.pdf

  9. WebtvDan says:

Comparing the available watts between 8 ohms and 4 ohms helps evaluate the quality of construction and power supply. Those are good specifications’ indicating the amplifier has a large power supply. The BEST amplifiers “double down” meaning the available watts into 8 ohms doubles into 4 ohms. The VERY BEST doubles again into 2 ohms. Typical inexpensive receivers with inadequate power supplies will be rated 80 watts into 8 ohms and 105 into 4 ohms – not even close to doubling. You could use any speaker you wanted with that amplifier.Have you listened to Martin Logan or Magnepan panels speakers? I think they are the ‘best’. They are inefficient 4 ohms speakers – that make beautiful music. That amplifier would be perfect for them. Martin Logan and Magnepan speakers are based on different technologies but both sound very different to paper cone speakersMartin Logan electrostatic speakers are easier to find. They can be found at independent audio solons and Magnolia stores. If used speakers are acceptable my favorite speaker under $2500 is the discontinued Aerius. Magnepan’s are available only at independent audio solons and much harder to find. Magnepan has a web only special on their least expensive speaker – a 60 day money back guarantee and 100% credit toward better models for one year. Personally, I would travel to the closest store and listen prior to purchasing.Once you’ve heard these speakers you’ll never be satisfied with box speakers and paper cones again.Good Luck and Have Fun.

Yes there are Speakon to 1/4 inch adapters:http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/VTG-NA4LJR-NEUTRIK-SPEAKON-F-ADAPTER?sku=336313

Neutrik makes both single and combo connectors the latter of which accepts both xlr and 1/4″. Just make sure to get the right one.

  13. sparky3489 says:

Anytime you add a driver to an amp, the load changes (drops in half) thus making the amp work harder which in turn causes overheating. This also forces the amp to produce more power and distortion and is not what you want. You will need another amp.

  14. element_skateboards9307 says:

i have those strings, a decent amp, and good cables. i don’t care if i still have the original pickups, there’s no way to make it sound real. the fretwire is still bad, the neck is still bad, and the body is still bad. and besides you can get a real stratocaster off of craigs list for 250 and up.and that caps is just plain annoying
