Typically want to use some type of connector as it provides the best strength and is the easiest to keep stable. There are such things as “Ethernet Extenders” which just have a jack on each end.Conversely, it can be done. Just make sure you do a tidy job of it. Don’t untwist too much and keep the pairs tight. Wires 1,2,3 and 6 are your data wires. If you don’t use PoE or anything else then you only need to worry about those (Orange/White, Orange, Green/White, Green, respectively).
