Electrical problems are always tedious to find. What you describe seems to be a short circuit somewhere. This can be from a bad component, wires frayed and touching others or the car ground. Taking your car to most shops is not going to be so helpful unless you take it to an actual auto electric shop. Either way, these can be somewhat expensive. At least the auto electric shop actually has people that really know how to work on, and properly test auto electronics. Most shops don’t pay for qualified electronics technicians. They just use generic auto testing equipment, and replace parts. Personally, I would check it out myself. To do this you would need to get a couple of things. First would be a VOM. (Volt-Ohm-Meter). Get one of the analog styles instead of the digital. (You can use this to actually watch the meter swing for checking engine codes at a computer test plug, or intermittent shorts in components. You can’t see this type of use with a digital meter. So, if you are only going to buy one, buy analog.) These meters will work to check resistance, continuity, AC, and DC voltages. The next thing you would need is a good wiring schematic for your car. The best ones you can get are in your public library. They have factory service manuals, and the Mitchell Automotive series manuals. (Mitchell is the best). You can’t take these books from the library, but you can copy what you need. (Copy on an 11X17 paper for ten cents each, and you can get two book pages on one sheet.) These copies would be much easier to see than the cheap paper used in Haynes, or Chilton books from your local auto stores. It just takes a little time at the library to find the right ones. For about a dollar you can have the whole section you need. You can trace out the circuits on these schematic diagrams to find possible problem areas, and parts that you can then test with your meter. You would also then better understand what someone might be talking about if you were to ask questions about a specific part, or finding. This all can take a bit of time in sitting in your home looking over the diagrams, tracing things out to have a better understanding of where things go, how they connect, or relate to other things, and then in actually following the diagrams while tracing out wiring in your car. However, this all can save a good deal of expense. Look at it this way: What dealer can give a 100% guarantee that for that $2k he will definitely fix your problem, or that it won’t cost more? Your own time expended far outweighs this expense output, and even if you need to have some work done after you trace out the problem, it can be a whole lot less of an expense. You might even have a friend, or two, that can help. All the while you would be learning of how better to take care of problems yourself, thus saving you money in the future.

Who knows…since you didn’t say how much it costs….

For stock, it is decent. 173 watts, with XM radio. Not going to bump with it, but it is pretty good for stock.

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/1998/volkswagen/jetta/gls_sedan/749/specifications/You can check out your specs here. I dont see anything about BOSE, but it could be an upgrade or certain package that BOSE came in them. The easy way to find out is to look on the deck, it should say on there if it is a BOSE system. If you still aren’t satisfied and theres a doubt in your mind check out your speakers, you may need to go as far as to take them out and look at the coil (the magnet on the back). If you need anything else contact me (sorry for saying “BOSE” so much)

look for a deck with 4v preouts and that have atleast 13-18W RMS( usually 50 x 4 W Max)MTX is a renowned audio brand, and does make a difference since it is usally able to pump out more power than rated. Alpine HU, MTX amp, w/ kicker or JL subs is a good setup.Make sure you get an amp w/ atleast 300W RMS for good bass response

MP3 means that the stereo will play a disc full of Mp3’s. A blank CD that has songs in MP3 fomat instead of WAV format will hold about 7 times the songs because they take up less memory. For example, a standard 70 minute blank CD will hold about 80 – 4 minute songs in mp3 format. However, it would only hold 17 songs in WAV format because it requires more memory space. A aux plug for your ipod or mp3 player is different than an mp3 player in your stereo.

The difference between a Jetta & GLI is really simple. The GLI’s are the sport model of the Jetta! Where the GLX is the Luxury version. 2002 is when VW reintroduced the GLI which came in a six speed VR6! No other real exciting extra features than that! However the GLI model you might be looking at is 2004 1/2 to 2005! Which this particular model has a six speed manual 1.8T(also 5 sp auto w/tiptronic), Recarro racing seats, brushed aluminum interior, Monsoon sound system, 18″ BBS RC racing wheels, slightly lowered/stiffer suspension, & body kit including front spoiler/rear spoiler/side skirts painted to match, also a sport tuned exhaust cat back! If you need any more info than that let me know!
