Power Rack and Pinion Steering Failure ?
I have a 1987 Mazda 626 LX sedan that came with factory power Rack Power rack and pinion steering. It has developed a small leak around one of the rack boots. Question is ? If this unit completed failed at some point as in fluid loss, could I lose steering control ?Rick M.

I’ve never tried to, but I’m sure it could be done. The only problem would be where would you go to get parts? Why does yours need rebuilding? have you looked at your pump, lines [both pressure and return line]?

  2. baldie says:

it could be just dried out and cracked.

Not sure what a resolver is, but admittedly someone was smoking near it.

  4. book writer says:

Try the Lucas power steering fluid, if that don’t work you can do like some used car lots and use a little brake fluid in the reservoir of the power steering(a little is about 3-5 drops)this will swell the rubber seals just a little and seal off the leak some! So people do the same thing to their transmittion to stop a leak!

  5. Johnny says:

Follow it down from the back of the power steering pump, like the other answer, the power line will be the one with the steel lines and fitted captured nuts.

Your power steering rack is leaking, therefore the worse that could happen is that you will lose power steering. Not bad in a Metro, but a little tough in a Ranger. It depends how bad the rear axle leak is, but you definitely want to get that fixed soon. If the rear end goes with out fluid, it will heat up and lock up. Then you will have to replace the whole rear end and that’s about $1300 just in parts. Do the maintenance now, so you don’t spend more later.

you have the rack… now do the squats.deadlifts are also great for the butt and legs.

  8. dodge man says:

i put one on my car and the rebuilt rack cost about 189.95 ,labor would cost you about 75-100 bucks and then the front end needs to be realigned total cost on this one shouldn’t go over 450-500 bucks at the most, and that’s figuring it on the high side it will probably be a little less than this price, good luck.

  9. Jeremy G says:

It’s possible that it was caused from the wreck. The impact from the crash could have caused something to break inside the rack & pinion.

  10. fudge_mutt says:

They could be used for a stack. Basically a power amp is what takes the signal from the preamp and gives it some balls. A preamp by itself is pretty useless but is what shapes the sound basically. A stack head is pretty much both combined (preamp and power amp) andif you get a power amp youll need to purchase a preamp.

There could be a million things wrong, but I think the most likely causes are either: a partial clog in the power steering line, or a weak power steering motor. Is it leaking fluid? If it is, then it is probably the rack.

A used one is between $200-300 & anew one is between $300-500. It depends where you GO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also get a second opinion, I just paid $176.00 for a new power steering pump & belt to be replaced>

the best way is to post an ad stating you are looking for Power Rack shops in toronto. Then you will have store owners sending you their addresses .You will be in a good postition then because you can check their websites, compare their prices, etc. Here’s a canadian site to post that ad:http://www.nortad.com/Classifieds/cat.php?type_id=4&cat_id=146&loc_id=112best of luck

measure the distance at the postion is at then remove the seat out of the car then your handy tool manual adjust it MIght need to remove motor conection on both side measure it then mount it loose to see if this right then try again if not. if it is right tight the bolt down.

Each piece of equipment should have a nameplate where the Amps, Volts and Watts are stated. if you want kva, add the amps and multiply by the volts. If you want heat load, add the watts. Remember that these are maximum values, not necessarily actual ones. Also, if you are going to measure them with an amprobe, they are distorted with harmonics and again you may not get real values…

RICK,…DON’T WORRY ABOUT THIS. THEY ALL LEAK A LITTLE, WITH AGE, AND MILEGE. IF THIS A GREAT CONCERN, AND WORRY TO YOU, GO TO PEP BOYS, AND THERE YOU WILL FIND POWER STEERING FLUID/WITH A SEALER ADDITIVE IN IT. JUST TOP IT OFF, NOW AND THEN,AND THE LEAK WILL SLOWLY STOP. ITS FINE DON’T WORRY, SAVE YOUR MONEY, GO TO PEP BOYS, AND HAPPY MOTORING!!!!

  17. Gina B says:

You can definately be leaking fluid from your Power steering pump, rack or pressure hoses. Racks can easily bust a seal cause fluid to leak in and around the boot area. If you need to buy one check out remsteering.com they sell remanufactured steering racks at a descent price.

  18. Chris Ford says:

Depending on where you live $175 exchange.

Many of the engine or trans repairs in a Taurus require pulling the engine/trans/ front clip and suspension all to gether. Not a simple job and the shops that can handle it charge for the expertise and for the shop space needed. Also a special (and expensive) cradle might be needed to support the powertrain when handling the whole powertrain. Not sure about the steering though. Get a second and even a third opinion – from different shops.

may be cheaper to buy a rebuilt or new rack in the long run, but if you feel the need to rebuild the one you have your going to need a manual anyway so I’d start there.
