Ok Obviously none of these people has ever changed a thermostat….lol You don’t need to turn the power off to change the thing.A thermostat runs on the same amount of power as a telephone or doorbell.There is no danger of electricution here.However if you are still skeptical.Go to your furnace and find the switch that just shuts it off.It will be obvious It is just like a regular light switch. Then just follow the directions that came with your thermostat for hooking up the wires bc it is important to get that part correct.

Your batteries have been recharged so many times they can no longer hold their original capacity. You recharged them improperly and diminished their capacity.
